Thyagi Bhakthavatchalam was born on 09.10.1897 in Nazarethpet. The speech of Gandhiji regarding non-cooperation movement in 1921; the speech of Balagangadhara Tilak, Bipin Chandrabal and Swami Vivekananda and the articles of Thiru V.Ka.Inspired him to involve himself actively in Freedom Struggle.
He is a Nationalist and follows Gandhism. He assumed office as Deputy Mayor of Chennai Corporation in 1935. He went to prison being actively participating in all freedom struggles declared by Gandhiji. He was imprisoned for 3 years because of his active participation in Quit India Movement in 1942. He held various portfolios as Minister from 1946 to 1962. He was the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu from 1963 to 1967. He breathed his last in 13.02.1987.
Memorial for Bhakthavatchalam was constructed at a cost of Rs.27.50 lakh on 13.03.1998 in Gandhi Mandapam Campus, Guindy, Chennai
