Bishop Robert Caldwell was born on 7th May 1814 in Ireland. Caldwell arrved in Idayaiankudi after walking Hundreds of miles on behalf of the society for the propagation of the Gospel Mossion in the year 1841. Caldwell married Eliza Mault on 20th March 1844. She was the younger daughter of the Veteran Travancore missionary, Reverend Charles Mault of the London Missionary Society. He planned to built a church in Idaiyakudi in the year 1847 and completed it and also constructed a Mission bungalow in 1880.
He work the book “A comparative Grammer of the Dravidian of South Indian Family of language in 1856. He wrote the book, A political and General History of the District of Tirunelveli.
Caldwell breathed his last in kodaikanal on 28th August 1891. His body was furied in the church built by him in idaiyankudi. His wife Eliza breathed her last in 18th June 1899 and her body, was buried in the church.
The 25th building constructed by Caldwell was built using Limertime, clay, wood and thatched using roof behind which there is a Swimming Pool and well. The Cot, furniture, photos and other materials used by Caldwell are placed inside the building. A primary school is functioning in front of the building.
The four bells placed at the top of the 125 years old church in idayankudi is another series of bells in London which rings aloud the fame of Bishop Caldwell.
