Perunthalaivar Kamarajar was born on 15th July 1903 to Kumaraswamy – Sivakami in Virudupatti called as Virudhunagar. Introduced by Dr.Varadarajalu Naidu, one of the Congress Leaders, Kamarajar participated in various freedom struggles from 1919 and went to prison. He participated in Salt Satyagraha and went to prison in 1930. He became the Secretary of Tamil Nadu Congress Party in the year 1936. He became the Chairman of Virudhunagar in 1941. He became the Member of Legislative Assembly (Virudhunagar) in 1946. He was elected as the president of All India Congress Party in 1947 and 1950.
He became the Member of Parliament from Virdhunagar in 1952. He became the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu in 1953 and again in 1957. He was elected as the President of All India Congress Party in 1964. He became the Member of Parliament from Nagercoil in 1969.
When Kamarajar was the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, the state made immense strides in Education. New schools were opened, better facilities were added to existing ones in all Villages. He introduced the Midday Meals Scheme to provide atleast one meal per day to Lakhs of Poor Children. He constructed Dams in various districts for the development of Agriculture. He worked for the country for 57 years in his life span of 73 years. Kamarajar was praise as “Karma Veerar” and “Perunthalaivar” by the people because of his principles, Truth, Purity, Honesty and Service.
As per the order of the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu Selvi J Jayalalithaa, Kamarajar Manimandapam in Kanyakumari district is renovated at a cost of Rs. 37 Lakhs.
