Kavirasu Kannadan was born on 24th June 1927 to Saathappan – Visalaatchi in the Village Sirukoodalpatti adjacent to Tirupattur in Sivagangai District. His Original name is Muthaiah. He had his early education in Sirukoodalpatti. He studied till Eighth Standard in Amaravathy Pudur.
Though he followed Hinduism, he wrote ‘Yesu Kaaviyam’ without any Religious discrimination. He was an admirer of Kambar’s poetry and songs of Bharathiyar. He accepted Bharathiyar as his intrinsic Guru. Kavingnar Kannadasan wrote more than four thousand Poems and more than 5000 songs for Tamil films.
He wrote his first song for the film ‘Kanniyin Kadhali’. He was the Editor of the magazines Thirumagal, Thiraioli, Methaan, Sandaamaarutham, Thendral Kannadasan monthly magazine and Kaditham. His poetry ‘Aatanathi Aadhi Mandhi Seiyul’ is included in the Text book of Tamil Nadu Government.
His series of works are titled as Arthamulla Hindu Matham, Yesu Kaaviyam, Film songs and Maangani. His poetry works include Ponmazhai, Kannadasan Kavithaigal, Avaluku Oru Paadal, Sruthi Seraatha Raagangal, Mutru Peraatha Kaaviyangal, Bajagovindam, Krishna Anthaathi and Krishna gaanam. His novels are Aval Oru Hindu pen, Sivappukkal Mookuththi, Retha Puspangal, Swarna Saraswathi, Nadantha Kathai, Misa, Sruthi Seraatha Raagangal, Muppathu naallum Powrnami, Arangamum Antharangamum,
Aayiram theevu Angayarkanni, Dheiva Thirumanangal, Aayirangaal Mandapam, Kaathal Konda Thennaadu, Athai Vida Ragasiyam, Oru Kavignanin Kathai, Singaari Paartha
Chennai, Velangaatiyur Vizha, Vizhaku mattuma Visapu, Vanavasam and Brindhavanam.
His Autobiographies are Enathu Vasantha Kaalangal, Vanavasam, Enathu Suyasaritham and Manavasam. His essays are Kadaisi pakkam, Poi Varukiren, Anthi – Santhi – Arthajaamam, Naan Paartha Arasiyal, Ennangal, Vaazhkai Ennum Solaiyile, Kudumba Sugam, Gnanaambika, Raagamaalika, Ilakkiyathil Kaadhal, Thottathu Malargal and Ilakiya Yuthangal. His plays are Anaarkali, Sivagangai Seemai and Raja Dhandanai.
Kavingnar Kannadasan had written commentary for Bhagavad Gita and detailed Explanatory Commentary for Abirami Pattar’s Abirammi Anthaathi.
Kannadasan wrote story and dialogue for the first time to the film produced by T.R.Sundaram. He started Kannadasan films and succeeded in producing the film ‘Maalayita Mangai’. In the year 1970, He got Best Lyricsist award of Central and State Governments. He became the Poet Laureate of the Government of Tamil Nadu in the year 1978. He got Sahithya Academy Award in 1979. Kannadasan breathed his last on 17.10.1981.
A bust size Statue of Kannadasan was erected in Karaikudi, Sivagangai district. A library functions with 2400 books along with an Auditorium. Photos narrating the biography of Kannadasan is also exhibited. Hon’ble Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu Selvi J Jayalalithaa inaugurated the Manimandapam for Kannadasan at a cost of Rs.54.30 lakhs on 21.10.1992 in Karaikudi, Sivagangai District.
The Statue of Kaviarasu Kannadasan in T.Nagar, Chennai is garlanded and Paid floral Tribute by the Government of Tamil Nadu on 24th June, his birthday.
