“Sun of Language”
Mozhi Gnaiyiru Devaneya Pavanar was born on 7th February 1902 in Perumbudur Village near Sankarankoil at Tirunelveli District to his parents Gnanamuthu and Paripooranam. He lost his parents at the age of five (5). He learnt his education with the help of “Young” Durai. He was awared the tittle Pundit from Madurai Tamil Society in 1924 as a poet from South Indian Tamil Society, Tirunelveli in 1926 and Pundit from Chennai University whole continuing as a teacher.
He was the Head of Tamil Department in Salem Municipal College for 12 Years (twelve). He worked as a Reader in Dravidian Pillology Annamalai University in 1956 for 5 years. He spearheaded the ‘Senthamil Sorpirapiyal Agara Muthali Thittam’ (Tamil Eymological Project), a project funded by the Tamil Nadu Government to trace the etymology of Tamil words in 1974. His contributions as the director of this project are commendable. He wrote 37 books comprising reserches on words. The Chief aim of these books and articles was to expound the greatness and antiquity of Tamil.
He learnt 23 languages including English, Hindi, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Arabic, Chinese, German and Sanskrit. He started Tamil Poet league in Trichy in the year 1941 International Tamil League in the year 1968 and become the president of International Tamil league. In his view, the Tamil language Originated in “Lemuria”. He breathed his last on 16th January 1981.Mozhi Gnayiru Devaneya Pavanar memorial was established at a cost of Rs.39.60 lakh in Madurai District in commemoration of Devaneya Pavanar and inaugurated on 30th Ocotober 2007.
