Sankaralinganar was born in 1895 to Peria Karupasamy Nadar – Valliammai. He was the Secretary of the Society for Women Education development in 1914. He joined Congress Party in 1917 after his marriage in 1915. He became the disciple of Rajaji after he met him in 1920. He wrote and published the book ‘Maathar Kadamai’. He joined ‘Khadar Iyakkam’ and worked for khadar development.
He was imprisoned six months for participating in Sathyagraha by Congress Party in Trichy. He was severely imprisoned for six months and imposed a fine of Rs.5 for participating in such a struggle in Karur.
With a Passion to serve the Nation, in 1944 He resigned his job with a salary of Rs.150 per month and joined Gandhi Ashram in Thiruchengode for a salary of Rs.30 per month.
He observed Fasting 76 days from 27.07.1956 to 10.10.1956. For name conversion of Chennai Presidency as “Tamizhagam”. He was admitted to hospital in Madurai 10.10.1956. Perunthalaivar Kamarajar, Kakkan, Ma.Po.Sivagnanam, Perarignar Anna and Jeevanantham met him in the hospital and requested him to abandon fasting. But Sankaralinganar was steadfast in his decision. He is the only Person in India History to end his life by observing fast for many days in Gandhiyar Way.
When Perarignar Anna asumed the Office of Chief Minister for the first time, He fulfilled the request of Sankaralinganar by making necessary amendments in the law and passing it in legislative assembly for conversion of name of Chennai Presidency as “Tamil Nadu”.
Hon’ble Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu Selvi J Jayalalithaa Inaugurated a Manimandapam for Thiyagi Sankaralinganar constructed at a cost of Rs.77.00 lakhs in Virudhunagar, Virudhunagar District on 18.06.2015 in commemoration of his sacrifice.
