THAMIZH THATHA DR. U.V.SWAMINATHA IYER NINAIVU ILLAM
‘Tamil Thatha’ Swaminatha Iyer was born on 19th February 1855 in the small village Uttamadhanapuram near Papanasam in Thanjaur district. His original name was Venkatraman. Since it was the name of his Grand Father, his mother started to call him by the name Swaminathan.
Swaminatha Iyer learned Tamil Literature and grammar as a devoted student to Mahavidwan Meenakshi Sundaram Pillai, a great Poet and Scholar. When he worked as the head of the Tamil Department at the Government Arts College, Kumbakonam, he started searching for the original texts of ancient literary works in the form of Palm leaf manuscripts.
After a period of hardwork and tireless efforts, he published Silappattikaram in the year 1892 and consequently Manimegalai and Purananuru. He also published Ingurunuru and Pathittru Pathu in the year 1902-1904.
The works and service of Iyer was being recognized and appreciated by foreign scholors including Julian Winsone and G.U.Pope.
Dr. U.V.Swaminatha Iyer breathed his last in the year 1942.
The house where U.V.Swaminatha Iyer lived in Thiruvarur was nationalized at a cost of Rs.1.37 lakh, renovated at a cost of Rs.23 lakh and inaugurated on 27.04.2008.
