V.O.Chidambaranar was born in 5.9.1872 as Elder son to Ulaganathan Pillai – Paarvathy in Ottapidaram, Thoothukudi District. He had his Primary Education in Ottapidaram, Higher Secondary Education in Tuticorin and law Education in Trichy in 1895 and became a Lawyer. The meeting with Ramakrishnanander of Vivekanander triggered a new beginning in the life of V.O.C. and added fumes to the Freedom Spark in his heart. Inspired by the freedom struggle of Bala Gangadara Tilak, he struggled for Indian Freedom.
He established a society Called “Swadeshi Naavai Sangam” and became its secretary. He purchased two ships – Kaalia, Lavo and started its operation from Tuticorin harbour. So he was hailed as “Kappalottiya Tamizhan”. The British Government being annoyed by Freedom Struggle activities of V.O.C. imposed double life time imprisonment for V.O.C. in 9th march of 1908 on account of contempting Government during the liberty celebration of Vipin Chandrabalar and inducing the public for freedom.
An appeal against this verdict was filed in Chennai High Court. Since V.O.C. cannot be sent to Andaman during appeal, he was imprisoned in Kovai Jail. There he was yoked on oil press. He is also called as “Chekkizhutha Semmal”. He breathed his last in 18.11.1936. The oil press to which V.O.C. was yoked on is kept for public observation one in Kovai Prison and another in Gandhi Mandapam Campus, Guindy Chennai.
The Birth Anniversary of V.O.Chidambaranar is celebrated annually on 5th September in Ottapidaram, Thoothukudi district by the Government of Tamil Nadu.
