Valluvar Kottam was opened on 14th April 1976, by the President of India His excellency Mr. Bakrudeen Ali Ahmed presided by the Governor His excellency Mr.K.K.sha. Valluvar Kottam is open for Public visit every day from Morning 8 a.m. to Evening 6 p.m. Entrance fee of Rs.5 for Adults, and Rs. 3 for children and students is collected. Lakhs of visitors visit Valluvar Kottam every year.
DECORATIVE ARCH The Decorative Arch is designed in such a manner that the first couplet of Tirukkural “A, as its first of letters every speech maintains; The “Primal Deity” is first through all the world’s domains.” engraved artistically in the entrance.
‘KURAL MANIMADAM’ The 1330 couplets of Tirukkural are engraved in colorful stones of 5 feet length and 2 feet breadth in open book form with 2 chapters per pillar. 38 chapters on righteousness are engraved in Granite, 70 chapters on wealth are engraved in Ash coloured stone and 25 chapters on love are engraved in deep-red stone including Thiruvalluva Malai of Sangam poets.
VEYA GALLERY Above “Kural Manimadam’, Veya Maadam is constructed with 220 feet length and 140 feet breadth. Veya Gallery is constructed in such a way that the Top most part of the Chariot. The Roof and the Statue of Tiruvalluvar in the sanctum sanctorium are visible in 2 big water ponds and one small pond.
SANCTUM OF THE CHARIOT The architectural pattern of the Valluvar Kottam is like a temple chariot inside which there is a huge stone effigy of the Saint Thiruvalluvar with 7 feet height.
AUDITORIUM The main Auditorium of the Valluvar Kottam can provide accommodation to more than 3, 500 people at a time and stands as a contemporary cenotaph to the great and distinguished poet and Saint, who symbolizes the splendid culture of the Tamils. The colour portraits of Tiruvalluvar in the centre of the stage and the portraits of the sangam poets, Adangottasaan and Tholkappiar in the sides adds beauty to the Auditorium.
SCULPTURE CHARIOT The construction of valluvar Kottam is like a temple chariot, and it is a replica of the temple chariot in Thiruvalluvar. The chariot is looft high from Ground. The wheels of chariot large and small in size were made of single stone individually. The diameter of the large wheel is 1 ½ ft, Thickness 1 ¼ ft, and that of small wheels 5ft 8 inches in diameter and ¾ ft in thickness. The chariot is designed in such a way that two elephants of 7ft height drag the chariot. The pedestal of the chariot is raised upto 3o feet in height covering 25 ft area in sq.ft. single couplet from each chapter is selected and sculptural visual is designed accordingly around the chariot.
TIRUKURAL REVIEW Tirukural review is conducted from the year 2001, every Saturday on 10 a.m. presided by Prof. Dr.G.Mohanarasu, Former HOD, Tirukural department, Madras University is attended by many Researchers interested in Tirukural.
