Vellayathevan was a brave, handsome warrior filled with valaur hailing from Tirunelveli. Veerapandiya Kattabomman who did not have Children adopted Vellaya thevan as his son. Vellayathevan was an unmatched soldier. He was very fond of wars and Bullbaiting Vellaya theran was the first to offend the British people who came to collect tax from Veerapandiya Kattabomman.
Vellaiammal Sweared to marry the man who tames her bull which is very hard to be tamed. Vellaiyathevan tamed the bull and married Vellaiyammal.
Under these Cirumstances, Bannnerman advanced his troops against Panchalankuruchi Kattabomman also forght against them. Vellayathevan and Vellayammal were recently married and Vellayammal was on the family way Vellayammal who experienced adverse dreams before the day of war, she entreated her husband not to go for war. But Vellayathevan continued to advice for war and killed the British.
While Vellayathevan was Commanding his soldiers at the top of the fort, thinking the war is over, one f the British soldier shot him to death in contradiction to the rules of the war. Vellayathevan who never expected such an attack, fell dead from the fort. Veerapandia Kattabommon keeped and mourned for Vellayathevan’s death keeping his body over his lap.
Vellayammal who heared the death of Vellayathevan, reged with anger and killed the man who killed her husband, in contradiction to the rules of the war.
A manimandapam was constructed for the freedom fighter Vellayathevan at a cost Rs.25 lakh near Government high school, vallanadu, in Palayamkottai road, Srirangam Taluk and enaugurated in 21.09.2007.
